<Vanity of vanities; all is vanity 헛되고 헛되며 헛되고 헛되니 모든 것이 헛되도다>, <Memento mori 죽음을 기억하라> 이 말들은 인간의 유한함과 세상 지식의 허무함, 물질의 헛됨, 시간의 유한함을 의미한다. 현대의 과학과 지식, 기술이 아무리 발달하더라도 재앙, 천재지변, 전염병, 노화 등을 피할 수 없는 게 인간이다.
시들어버린 꽃은 언젠가 죽음을 맞이 해야 하는 무력한 인간을 비유하는 상징물 중 하나이다. 화려하게 피어났던 꽃이 시들어지고 그 뒤를 이어 새로운 싹, 잎, 꽃이 피어나고, 열매를 맺고, 다시 시들어진다. 생물체에서의 소멸 시기는 생성(재생)의 시점으로 가는 필연적인 과정이 되며, 되살아나기 위해서는 필연적으로 죽음을 경험해야 한다는 것이다.
내 작업의 소재인 마른 풀, 마른 꽃들 역시 소멸의 과정을 거친 것들이다. 방 한가운데 매달려있던 꽃다발이 시들어서 죽어가는 과정을 관찰하며 작업이 시작되었고, 이러한 건초들을 모아 대상 자체에 집중하여 드로잉 하다가, 점차 건초더미들이 모이고 쌓여서 화면을 가득 채운 전면적인 회화로 확장되었다.

<Vanity of vanities; all is vanity>, <Memento mori> These phrases represent the limitation of human beings and time as well as the vanity of all matters and knowledge. Human beings can not avoid natural disaster, diseases and human aging even though contemporary science, technology and knowledge has been advanced.
Withered flower is a representative figure for helpless human beings that will eventually end up with deaths. A flower goes through life and death cycle that it blooms, withers and then it sprouts again and begins to make leaves, flowers and then it withers which goes on and on. The period of annihilation for a plant is essential in order to regain life.
My drawing objects, withered grass and withered flowers all went through the period of annihilation. I started drawing this work by observing the bunch of flowers withering in my room. I gathered dried flowers and grass, focused drawing the objects themselves at first and then as more and more dried objects were gathered, my work has been extended to whole canvas.
